IKOS SYSTEMS DONATES KEY TECHNOLOGY FOR COMMON EMULATION APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE (SCE-API)
SAN JOSE, Calif., February 12, 2001--IKOS Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: IKOS), a leading provider of high-performance design verification solutions, today announced it is taking a key role in the newly formed SCE-API Consortium. The company has agreed to donate its innovative Application Programming Interface (API) initially developed to enable C models running on a workstation to communicate with the design under test running in the IKOS VStation emulator. IKOS has agreed to work with the other founding members of the Consortium, emulation user ST Microelectronics, and EDA vendors, Mentor, Aptix, CoWare, TransEDA and Synopsys to put the fundamental technology in the public domain.
"We are very enthusiastic about donating our API to the SCE-API Consortium," said IKOS CEO and president, Ramon Nuñez. "The alliance is furthering our effort to promote emulation as a mainstream solution for the verification of complex system-on-chip (SoC) designs. Donating our API technology to the Consortium for release to the public domain makes it much easier for third-party solutions to integrate to the VStation emulator.
The API enables verification tools running on the host workstation to co-emulate at speeds up to 1MHZ. Early adopters are currently seeing performance in the 100-700 KHZ range. The powerful and easy-to-implement API also allows vendors to integrate third party solutions such as intelligent test benches and system-level design tools with their emulation solution.
Linda Prowse-Fosler, vice president of marketing for IKOS Systems commented, "We completed the initial development of the IKOS API TIP (Transaction Interface Portal) one year ago, with the intent of keeping the technology proprietary. When our customers implemented the technology, they experienced huge productivity improvements. We also saw tremendous interest from producers of emulation compatible third-party solutions. We realized putting the API into the public domain was to the benefit of our customers and to the growth of emulation as a mainstream verification method for complex designs."
Prowse-Fosler continued, "ST Microelectronics and the manager of its CMG division functional verification competence center, Gerard Mas, has been instrumental in helping to drive the efforts of the consortium. ST helped interest a number of EDA software and hardware vendors in supporting the effort."
The consortium is currently in discussions with two industry standard’s groups, Open SystemC and Acellera. Each of these organizations has expressed interest in making the phase one specification and example available to their members by the end of March 2001.
